French authorities will start intercepting small boats in English Channel after British demands
France has agreed to begin stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
The change in policy follows the British leader sent a letter to the French leader urging him to support the plan and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces will be allowed to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to official statements.
French authorities have rarely intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered too great a danger to both personnel and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police representative says officers will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a potential method to snarl the propellers of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a significant advancement, following a short-lived shift towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official departed from office.
That was highlighted in July, preceding a summit between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Now French authorities will once more be permitted to stop boats before they collect migrant passengers from the beaches of northern France, although it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently delaying the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be looking for methods to adjust to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
